Vice-director of this Institute (1999-) and has been head of the Department for 12 years (1986-98). His scientific activity is devoted to the study of trace organic compounds in the environment as indicators of natural and man-mediated processes and/or risk to ecosystems, organisms and human beings. To date, he has published 228 papers in internationally peer reviewed journals, including Nature, GCA, ES&T, Anal. Chem. and Paleoceanogr. He has edited 5 volumes of Journal of Chromatography and 2 of Organic Geochemistry. He has also edited the book Organic Geochemistry: Developments and Applications to Energy, Climate, Environment and Human History (AIGOA, Donostia, 1995, 1150p.) He has supervised 13 Ph.D. Theses. He is member of the Board of the European Association of Organic Geochemists (1991-) and of the Spanish Association of Chromatographists (1980-). He has participated in 52 research projects sponsored by Agencies from EU, USA, UNESCO, Spain and Catalonia, co-ordinating 16 of these projects.

Assistant professor at CSIC. She has devoted her scientific activity to the analysis of trace organic compounds, namely POPs and endocrine disruptors, in diverse environmental matrices. She has published 30 papers in the scientific literature, including journals such as Anal. Chem. and ES&T

Researcher at CSIC. He has spent the last 8 years working on the control of the transcription of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (MIT, Massachusetts, USA, 3 years; IMBB-CSIC, 5 years). As a consequence of this work he has cloned ADA3, one of the principal co-factors as estrogenic acceptors in yeast. Previously he worked in the regulation of the genetic expression mediated by steroidal hormones (Heidelberg, Germany). He has authored about 25 papers on this topic including journals such as Molecular Cellular Biology, Journal of Biological Chemistry and Journal of Molecular Biology.

Tasks:

CSIC convenes the "regionalisation of lake micropollutant distribution" work package (WP 3) and performs all the analyses of organic compounds in the samples collected within the project. This includes air, atmospheric precipitation, water, settling particles, sediments and organisms (fish and food web). This group, through collaboration with the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IMBB-CSIC), also develops a bioassay for estrogenic and anti-estrogenic activities using recombinant yeast. Specialist assistance with field sampling for POPs is given to EMERGE partners where required. Within CSIC the EMERGE project contributes to, and benefit from, regional projects of the Junta de Sanejament, Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Autonomous Government); and at a national level the Programa Nacional de Medio Ambiente of the Secretaria de Estado de Educacion, Universidades, Investigacion y Desarrollo of the Ministerio de Educacion y Cultura of the Spanish Government.
