Professor Titular and Director of the Centre for High Mountain Research. 17 years experience in aquatic ecological studies, he has co-ordinated 8 national projects and participated in 6 EC-funded projects. He has over 60 scientific publications on aquatic biogeochemistry, algal biology and lake ecosystem dynamics in journals that include Limnology and Oceanography, Journal of Geophysical Research, Water Resources Research, Water, Air and Soil Pollution, Water Research, Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Hydrobiologia, Journal of Plankton Research, Aquatic Microbial Ecology, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Freshwater Biology, Atmospheric Environment, Archiv Hydrobiologie, Phycologia, British phycological Journal, and four chapters in international books. More than half of his scientific carrier has been dedicated to research in high mountain lakes.

Seven years of experience in GIS and remote sensing at the International Institute for Aerospace Surveys and Earth Sciences (ITC), Holland; University of Barcelona (SpainGIS/RS Laboratory, Keio University SFC, Japan. Her work has involved environmental modelling using different software, among them 'ArcInfo' and 'Erdas'; image processing and interpretation having worked in different strategies for automatic classification and spectral mixing analysis. She is also familiar with DBMS as well as with spatial analysis and cartographic production.

Tasks:

UB-DE convenes the thematic programme on "up-scaling", and co-ordinates the work packages: "regionalisation: remote sensing and spatial modelling of lake/catchment attributes" (WP 6), and "Evaluation: classification of the ecological status of lakes" (WP 7). In WP 1 an automatic weather station is maintained at lake Redó; thermistor chains deployed in 3 lakes and surface mini-thermistors deployed in 20 lakes in the Pyrenees. In WP 2 S and N deposition for all Lake Districts in the project are extrapolated in collaboration with the Norwegian Meteorological Service (DNMI) (sub-contractor); lake chemical classification undertaken for the Pyrenees; regionalisation of rock and soil properties relevant to water chemistry for the Pyrenees and rock analysis for Scotland; and regional application of MAGIC7 for the Pyrenees in collaboration with NIVA. In WP 3 a field survey of the lakes in the Pyrenees is carried out for regionalisation of the micropollutant distribution. In WP 4 a survey of 30-50 lakes in the Pyrenees and analysis of water chemistry, diatoms, planktonic food web, invertebrates and sediments (chironomids, diatoms and fossil pigments) is undertaken. In WP 5 sampling support is given for the studies of bioaccumulation of pollutants in lake Redó and two lakes more in the Pyrenees; zooplankton and invertebrates will be analysed. In WP 6 a GIS for the Pyrenees is be developed; and remote sensing modelling of catchment attributes undertaken for all Lake Districts together with the development of an expert system interfacing GIS stored information with physical, chemical and biological models. In WP 7 UB-DE participates in the co-ordination and development of workshops on classification of ecoregion and ecotype; identification of reference conditions and natural variability, establishment of quantitative indicator of ecological status and setting up of appropriate monitoring systems.

Lake Districts:

  1. Pyrenees

  2. In WP 2 S and N deposition for all Lake Districts in the project.
