Field of expertise: Chemistry of atmospheric deposition and the geochemical cycling of ions in the environment, with special attention to lake acidification. In this field he has studied atmospheric deposition in north-western Italy and its effects on sub-alpine and alpine lakes. Besides, he considered lakes in remote areas, such as Antarctica and the Himalayan Region. He has been in charge of three EC projects (Air pollution effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems; Quantification and susceptibility of Alpine lakes to acidification; Acidification of remote mountain lakes: Palaeolimnology and Ecology, STEP). Since 1988 he has been the scientist in charge of the Italian network for the study of atmospheric deposition chemistry, on behalf of the Italian Ministry of the Environment. He participated in the COST 611 action as the Italian expert. In 1991 he was appointed the Italian expert on the Science Panel of the EC Concerted Action in the field of ecosystem research. He has collaborated with the Bureau Communitaire de Reference of the EC for the certification of samples for water and rain analyses. He is author or co-author of over 350 papers.

Tasks:

CNRIII together with SPAA-LSA is responsible for all field sampling at the Classification and Validation lakes in the Central Southern Alps (CSA) Lake District: CNRIII focuses on the Piedmont area of this district (c. 15 lakes). Special attention is given to lakes Paione Superiore and Paione Inferiore, for which long-term data (15 years) on chemistry and biology are available. CNRIII undertakes chemical analysis of deposition and lake water from the CSA Piedmont sites; phytoplankton; zooplankton; zoobenthos; diatoms; primary production / photosyntethic pigments. Other topics studied is the importance of allochthonous versus autochthonous POC fraction in the organic carbon pool and the sedimentation flux during ice-cover period, thaw and ice-free season, through the use of an automatic sedimentation trap system. In collaboration with NIVA CNRIII acts as the co-ordinating centre for the analytical quality control of the chemistry analyses of the whole project. The programme of pigment and carotenoids in sediment investigation is also co-ordinated at CNRIII. The activity foreseen in EMERGE is fully integrated with the research programmes currently carried out at CNRIII and supported by the National Research Council through the ordinary funded and special projects (CNR Strategic Projects on the Svalbard and Himalayas). In addition to the above national funds, EMERGE AQC activity is supported by Ministero Italiano dell'Ambiente.
