Senior research Scientist. A limnological oriented chemist with different interests in chemistry of surface water, atmospheric deposition and alpine lakes with particular attention to biogeochemical cycles in the environment. In the framework of ICPISW, since 1980 he is project leader of the research on the "Trophic evolution of Lake Lugano" and of studies performed regularly on Lake Lugano, such as "Assessment of nutrient release from the sediments" (1995-1998, with University of Z??rich, Institute of Plant Biology) and "Modelling of turbidity currents" (1999-2001, with EPFL and EAWAG). He also co-ordinates projects supported by the SNSF, like MICOL (1992-94, with the University of Z??rich) and DYTRAC (1999-2000, together with ETH Z??rich), and by the FOEFL, such as Column Alpine Lakes Chemistry (1997) and measurement of total deposition (1999). In the international field, he participated in some EC research programmes like "Quantification and suseptibility of Alpine lakes to acidification", TRAC and, more recently, in MOLAR (1996-1999).

Dr. sc. nat. - Research scientist. A freshwater biologist with experience in plankton ecotoxicology (EAWAG-ETH) and biogeochemistry of settling matter and sediments (UNI Z??rich). He is responsible for site operation, data management and modelling (AQUASIM, CHEMSEE) of aquatic systems, mainly for Lake Lugano and Alpine lakes. In the framework of the MOLAR project he took part in the sampling campaign, data interpretation and modelling.

Tasks:

SPAA-LSA together with CNRIII (8) is responsible for all field sampling at the Classification and Validation lakes in the Ticino region of the Central Southern Alps (CSA) Lake District (c. 15 lakes). Special attention is be given to lakes Laghetto Inferiore and Superiore where a long-term dataset of limnological (chemistry and biology) and catchment variables exist. SPAA-LSA undertakes chemical analysis of deposition and lake water from the CSA (Ticino) district sites; phytoplankton; zooplankton; zoobenthos; diatoms; photosyntethic pigments; and is responsible for sampling and analysis of catchment soils
