Ph.D. thesis on comparative population biology of Stizostedion lucioperca, Department of Hydrobiology, Institute of Zoology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1993). Associate Professor, Department of Hydrobiology and Ichthyology, Biological Faculty, Sofia University. Special expertise in freshwater fish population biology, size and age composition, growth rate, maturity, fecundity, fish ecology, food and predator-prey relationships. Published over 50 scientific papers.

Full Professor of Zoology and Hydrobiology at the Institute of Zoology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from 1986 until his death. Head of the Department of Hydrobiology at IZ-BAS (1989-1998). Chairman of the Specialized Scientific Council of Zoology and Ecology, IZ-BAS (1991-2001); Chairman of the Scientific Expert Commission on Biology of Organisms and Ecology at the Ministry of Education and Science; Head of the Plankton Working Group (SIL-International Association for Danube Research). Editor, Hydrobiology (Sofia); Editorial Board, Bulletin de l’Institut de Zoologie et Musee (Sofia), Fauna of Bulgaria, Acta zoologica bulgarica; Advisory Board, Limnologica (Germany). Special expertise in freshwater zooplankton of lakes (glacial, coastal, man-made), swamps and the Danube River; saprobiology; taxonomy and faunistics: Cladocera, Copepoda, Rotatoria. Project leader of many national and international projects. Published over 110 scientific papers, books, monographs and textbooks.

Tasks:

IZ-BAS undertakes all field sampling at the Classification and Validation lakes in the Bulgarian Rila Mountains, and assists UIBK-IZL and ECRC-UCL with the collection of sediment cores, fish and catchment-based determinations from sites in this region. IZ-BAS undertakes the following analyses from Bulgarian sites: water chemistry; phytoplankton; zooplankton; zoobenthos of the lakes and their inflows and outflows; ichthiology; and primary production/photosyntethic pigments.
